MAKING of PAPER CRAFT MODELS

Yamaha paper craft models are downloaded by a number of fans every day. Here's how the beloved models are planned and created.

As the name says it all, the model in "The Seasons" category is selected from seasonal themes. The example here, the Atlas Beetle of "Insects", was selected as the theme of summer. Many people in Japan beyond generations enjoy hunting for beetles as a summer tradition.

1. Researching the Beetle

The first step is to study the shape of the beetle in books and encyclopedias. The creators try to come up with the three-dimensional construction of the model that is easy enough for even young children to assemble.

2. Drawing Unfolded Patterns

The second step is to develop the unfolded patterns of the parts. Deciding on the number and composition of parts and adhesive margins of a 3-D model is a delicate and difficult task.

3. Making Prototypes

Sometimes assembling doesn't work, and sometimes the shape just doesn't come out right. A complete paper craft model is created through a trial-and-error process.

4. Unfolded Patterns are Complete! Now, the Coloring..

Colors are added to the completed pattern. The creators pay attention to the minute details so that the model looks real when assembled.

5. Finished!

The colored paper craft data is converted into PDF data. The photos of the assembled model are taken, and the assembly instruction is made before uploading them.
