When we held a request vote for the model to be used for the second edition of our Realistic Paper Craft series, the YZF-R1 was your first choice. Now we are reporting to you on the production process involved in changing the R1 into a paper craft model.
The first stage in that process known as the "solid model" has now been completed. This can be considered the basic form from which the model will be shaped.

The first step in the creation of a Realistic Paper Craft replica begins with the building of a 3-dimensional model that roughly duplicates the overall proportions of the model. This is called the "solid model." Although there is no attempt yet to apply any detail, this "solid model" stage gives the designer a grasp of the overall makeup of the parts and their relative sizes.
This "solid model" also becomes the basis for deciding which parts will be given greater detail to achieve an authentic appearance. As you can see, at this stage the model still lacks the flowing curves that characterize the R1.
Giving that kind of detail to the individual parts is the work of the next stage in the production process, the "prototype" stage.

In our next update we will show you the further worked up "prototype" model. Here is a preview of what some of the parts will look like in the next stage. As you can see, these parts recreate some of the R1's curved surfaces.
